Every autumn the same problem appears. The hedge has been cut, the fruit trees have been pruned and there is a growing heap of twigs, branches and leaves with nowhere to go. Burning it is rarely sensible, and filling the green bin only goes so far. A garden shredder or wood chipper turns that heap into mulch and compost material, but choosing the right machine is not as simple as picking the most powerful one.
This guide compares the electric shredder and the petrol chippers in the Hyundai range, using the specifications and prices listed on the Hyundai Power Equipment website on 25 October 2026. We keep to the brand’s published figures and add some general safety advice, so you can match a machine to the branches you actually have.

Chipper or Shredder: What Is the Difference?
The two words are often used as if they mean the same thing, but the machines suit different jobs. A shredder, usually electric, is built for twigs, trimmings and light branches. A chipper, usually petrol, has a heavier blade drum designed to bite through thicker wood and produce chips. Some petrol models, such as the Hyundai HYCH1400, combine both: a wide hopper for leaves and green waste plus a separate chute for branches.
- Garden shredder: light, plug-in, quiet to store and easy to wheel about. Best for hedge clippings, rose prunings and small branches.
- Compact petrol chipper: a step up in capacity, with an engine, a hopper and a drum with two blades. Suits fruit tree prunings and bramble.
- Heavy-duty petrol chipper: for large gardens, orchards and anyone who deals with sizeable branches regularly.
The Electric Option: Hyundai HYCH2400E
The HYCH2400E is the entry point. Hyundai describes a 2.4kW motor running at 4,200rpm that shreds twigs, branches and trimmings up to 4.5cm in diameter. It comes with a 45 litre collection bag, a 10m power cable and a wheeled frame, and the product graphic gives its weight as just 10.3kg. Because it is electric there is no fuel or oil to top up, which makes it a sensible choice for a small or medium garden where a socket is within reach.

On 25 October 2026 the HYCH2400E was priced at GBP 139.99 but showed as out of stock, so check availability before you plan your weekend around it.
Compact and Mid-Range Petrol Chippers
If your prunings are thicker than a finger, petrol is the usual answer. The compact HYCH6560 uses a 212cc 4-stroke engine and, according to Hyundai, chips branches up to 6cm across. At 45kg it is light enough to move between jobs, and Hyundai says the machine draws branches in, so you are not forcing them through by hand. The product graphic also lists ear defenders, gloves and goggles with this model, which is a thoughtful touch.

One step up, the HYCH7070E-2 uses a 212cc, 7hp engine with electric start and takes branches up to 7cm. It weighs 75kg and has two off-road pneumatic tyres and a front handle, which helps on soft ground or a sloping lawn. Electric start is worth having if you dislike pull cords, particularly in cold autumn mornings.
The HYCH1400 is the most versatile of the range. It has a 420cc, 14hp engine and two in-feed points. The wide hopper is intended for leaves and grass clippings, and a smaller cone-shaped chute handles branches up to 102mm. Hyundai says its metal flail system turns green waste into compostable mulch, while the chipping system makes wood chips suitable for pathways and frost protection. It weighs 95kg.

The Heavy-Duty Choice: HYCH1500E-2
For serious pruning, the HYCH1500E-2 pairs a 420cc, 14hp electric-start engine with a 2-blade drum that Hyundai rates for branches up to 10cm. It is the heaviest model here at 180kg, but the wide-set wheels and twin handles are designed to make it manageable, and the company says it suits both domestic and professional use. Hyundai also lists an even larger HYCH15100TE with an 11cm capacity, although it was out of stock when we looked.

Hyundai Chippers and Shredders Compared

| HYCH6560 | 212cc petrol | 6cm | 45kg | GBP 461.99 | Out of stock |
| HYCH7070E-2 | 212cc petrol, electric start | 7cm | 75kg | GBP 755.99 | In stock |

How to Choose the Right Machine
Start with the thickest branch you expect to feed in, then add a margin. A machine rated to 6cm is happiest with 4cm, and a shredder with a 4.5cm limit is for twigs, not logs. After that, think about the practical points:
- Branch size: match the machine to your typical pruning, not the rare big job. A hired chipper can cover an occasional large branch.
- Power source: choose electric if you have a socket close by and light material. Choose petrol for thick wood or a plot with no mains power.
- Weight and moving it: a 180kg machine is a different proposition from a 45kg one on a muddy lawn. Check where you will store it, too.
- Green waste: if you also have lots of leaves and clippings, the HYCH1400’s two in-feed points are designed with that in mind.
- Budget: compare the price with the cost of repeated tip runs or hired equipment over a few seasons.
Safety Tips Before You Switch On
Garden chippers are powerful machines with fast-moving blades, so treat them with care. These are general good-practice points, and the manual that comes with your machine always has the final word.
- Wear safety glasses or goggles, ear defenders, sturdy gloves and close-fitting clothes.
- Never put your hand into the feed chute, and keep children and pets well away from the work area.
- Check branches for stones, wire and nails before feeding them in, and do not shred plastic or metal.
- Use a stable, level surface, and switch off and wait for the blades to stop before clearing a blockage.
- Be considerate with timing, because petrol machines can be loud.
What to Do With the Chippings
The output is useful. Fresh chips make a mulch for paths and borders, and Hyundai notes they work for frost protection. Mixed with leaves and green clippings, shredded material breaks down faster in a compost bin than whole branches.
Final Thoughts
For a small garden with light prunings, an electric shredder such as the HYCH2400E is simple and affordable. If you regularly prune fruit trees or hedges with thicker stems, a petrol model like the HYCH7070E-2 or HYCH1400 gives you more headroom, while the HYCH1500E-2 is for big jobs and big gardens. Whichever you choose, check the specifications for your branch size, then see the current price and stock on the official Hyundai Power Equipment store.
