Some gifts take weeks of thinking. A birthstone piece takes one question: when is their birthday? It is personal without being sentimental, it works for a best friend, a sister, a partner or yourself, and it gives the wearer a small story to tell when someone asks about it.

British jewellery brand Missoma sells a full birthstone collection, with a stone for every month of the year in three formats: a slider bracelet, a pair of mini charm hoops and a pendant necklace. Rather than another gift round-up, this guide goes month by month, explains how the three formats differ, and helps you pick the right metal. Prices and product details below were checked on the Missoma UK site on 4 November 2026 and may change.

Why Birthstone Jewellery Makes an Easy Gift

The appeal of a birthstone is that it is chosen for the person, not for the trend. You do not need to know their ring size, their favourite designer or whether they prefer chunky or fine jewellery. You only need a date, and the stone carries the meaning.

It also solves the problem of gifting for someone who already owns a lot of jewellery. A small coloured stone layers easily with the chains, hoops and bracelets they already wear, so it rarely clashes with their existing collection. And because every month has its own stone, you can build a family set over time, with each person’s stone on a single bracelet or a stack of pendants.

Missoma’s Birthstones, Month by Month

Missoma uses its own selection of stones, and a few differ from the traditional lists you may see elsewhere. March, for example, is milky aquamarine, April is crystal rather than diamond, and December is dyed turquoise magnesite. This is the stone listed for each month on the Missoma product pages we checked:

If you are buying for a November birthday, you are in luck: citrine is a warm golden tone that sits beautifully against gold plating and looks bright against silver too. It is also the stone Missoma was featuring in its basket suggestions when we visited.

Format One: The Birthstone Slider Bracelet

The slider bracelet is the most versatile of the three. Each one has a small square charm holding the stone on a fine chain. According to the product pages, the charm measures 7.1 x 7.1mm, the chain is adjustable up to 25cm and fits wrists up to 25cm, and the bracelet weighs 2.9g.

Because the chain slides to adjust, you do not need to know the recipient’s wrist size, which makes this the safest choice if you are unsure. It is offered in 18ct recycled gold plating on brass at GBP 125, and in recycled sterling silver plating on brass at GBP 115.

Format Two: The Mini Charm Hoop Earrings

For someone who wears earrings every day, the mini charm hoops are a subtle way to wear a stone. The hoop measures 11.5mm across with a 1.2mm thickness, and a tiny 3.9mm charm hangs from it. Missoma says the size works best for smaller lobes or second and third piercings, so they are a nice addition to a curated ear.

The 18ct gold plated versions were listed at GBP 85 and silver plated versions at GBP 75. Each pair weighs around 1.5g, so they are light enough to wear all day and to sleep in comfortably if the wearer keeps them in.

Format Three: The Birthstone Pendant Necklace

The pendant necklace is the most visible option and arguably the most classic gift. Missoma’s version is a star-ridge pendant measuring about 12.2mm x 11mm on a trace chain that adjusts from 41cm to 45cm. It weighs 4.45g, so it has a little more presence than the bracelet or the hoops.

Unlike the plated bracelets and hoops, the pendants we checked are made on recycled sterling silver: either silver plated sterling silver at GBP 115, or 18ct recycled gold vermeil on sterling silver at GBP 125. If metal quality is important to the person you are buying for, this is the format to choose.

Gold or Silver: How to Choose

Look at what they wear already. If their watch, rings and everyday hoops are yellow gold, stay with gold so the new piece layers without effort. If they lean towards cooler tones, silver will feel more natural. Stone colour matters too: warm stones such as citrine, peridot and garnet glow against gold, while blue stones such as lapis and milky aquamarine look crisp with silver.

  • Gold plated or vermeil: warmer, more statement, the slightly higher price option in each format.
  • Silver plated or sterling silver: cooler and minimal, about GBP 10 less in each format we checked.
  • Mixing metals: perfectly acceptable today, and an easy way to add a stone to an existing stack.

Caring for Plated and Vermeil Pieces

Plated jewellery lasts longer with a little care. Take it off before swimming, showering or applying perfume and lotion, and store pieces separately so they do not scratch each other. Missoma also sells a Jewellery Care Kit at GBP 25, which contains a polishing cloth, a jewellery cleaning spray and a soft bristle brush in a pouch. The instructions on the product page are simple: spray once or twice, brush, then rinse with water.

If you are giving the piece as a present, the care kit is also a thoughtful add-on that shows you have thought beyond the box.

Final Thoughts

A birthstone piece is one of the few gifts that feels personal even when you buy it at the last minute. Choose the format based on how they wear jewellery, pick the metal based on what they already own, and let the stone do the rest.
